An organization striving to help women succeed in the workplace and in life recently gave a scholarship to a Lake havasu High School graduate.
Susan Arner, president of the Lake Havasu City capter of the Women's Network Exchange of Arizona (WNEA), recogniaed Katherine Hempstead's leadership raits.
A graduate of LHHS this spring, Hempstead received a $1000 gift.
"What impressed us is she started a group that is sending care packages to soldiers overseas, in Iraq," Arner said.
Applications are being acepted for another round of awards in September. Local women looking to further their formal education are encouraged to apply, in addition to those who need work-related training to become eligible for a promotion or raise.
Applications can be picked up at Mohave Community College, Big Brothers Big Sisters' office at Interagency Council or Gold Star Engraving. The deadline for applying is Aug 10.
Between $4,000 and $5,000 will be awarded at the group's September member sppreciation meeting.
"It could be for five people or 10 people," Arner said.
WNEA is a nonprofit group of ambitious business women who are community orientated, member Melissa Underwood said. There are 76 members in Lake Havasu City. The local chapter donates money quarterly to the Havasu Health Trust and an area safe house for women.
Fundraising efforts and member donations keep the organization going. Its mission statement read: "To provide a forum wherein women may enter into an exchange of philosophies, with an enlarged and divers cirecle of friends and acquaintances, for the purpose of attaining success in business and in life."
