The
seed for WNEA (Women's Network Exchange of Arizona, Inc.) started many
years before its introduction in Lake Havasu City in January of 1999.
Lillian Nestle, who retired to Lake Havasu City in 1986, became active
in civic and political activities. She observed a need for women in
Lake Havasu to be more empowered. The solution was not immediately evident.
During
a temporary stay in the Phoenix area, Lillian attended monthly meetings
of a women's network group, WNEA, which at that time had several active
chapters. This network group was also affiliated with NAFE (National
Association of Female Executives).
After
returning to Lake Havasu City, Lillian's thoughts again turned to helping
local women. As a way to accomplish serving local women, she decided
to establish a group similar to WNEA here in Lake Havasu City. While
working on an announcement and mailing list, WNEA in the Phoenix area
was disbanding as another women's support group became more popular.
Thus,
Lillian took over WNEA and started the Lake Havasu Chapter in January
1999, with 15 Charter members. At the close of the first year (1999),
WNEA's membership was 34. At the close of 2000, WNEA had 80 members.
As of the end of the 2003 there are 85 members.
All
of the success of the increase in membership is due to the diligence
and support of its members, a dedicated board and committee chairwomen,
who continually bring guests to the monthly dinner meetings. A majority
of WNEA's members are recruited in this manner - friends helping friends.
WNEA's Annual Women's Seminar is also another avenue of recruiting members
and supporters.
